Journey to communities and towns in southern Italy, and you’re bound to find pasticciotti. This traditional dessert is a favorite among Italians, and it can become your favorite too. Find out all you need to know about pasticciotti.

What is Pasticciotti?

Imagine biting into a buttery, tender pastry sandwich filled with a creamy, delicious filling. That experience is what you’ll get when you taste a pasticciotti.

Traditionally, pasticciotti features a pastry crust baked in a tin and filled with either vanilla or chocolate filling, similar to a pudding consistency. The baking tins, known as pustie, resemble molds used for baking brioche. The tins are smaller at the bottom and become larger as they rise to the top.

When translated, the word pasticcio in Italian means “little mess,” an English translation which doesn’t fully capture the subtle sophistication of this dessert.

Where Did Pasticciotti Originate?

Many sources say that pasticciotti originated in the Puglia region of the southeast coast of Italy. A version of pasticciotti called pasticciotti Leccesi features an oval-shaped pastry. This version is from Salento in the province of Lecce in Puglia.

What Makes the Best Pasticciotti?

To achieve the best-tasting Italian cream-filled pastry experience, pasticciotti should balance crunch with creaminess. The ideal pastry base should be neither too thin nor too thick. It should snap when you bite into it, offering a bit of crunch.

Complementing the cookie base, the filling for a pasticciotti should be light and creamy, not overly sugary or too stiff. Flavors like black cherry, cream, or lemon are always delightful, but you can find pasticciotti with other filling flavors as well.

When Are Pasticciotti Usually Served?

Pasticciotti makes an excellent Italian dessert pastry to offer guests at the end of an Italian-inspired dinner. Italians like to eat them for breakfast, paired with a warm cup of cappuccino. It’s also a favorite among Italian pastries served during holiday and wedding celebrations.
