You’ve likely seen these jewel-toned bites in our bakery, but you still might be wondering, “What are macarons?” Macarons are French almond meringue desserts containing a filling in the middle. These melt-in-your-mouth, crunchy yet chewy little bites are among some of the most elegant French-inspired treats you can enjoy for yourself or give as gifts to friends and family.
What is a macaron made of?
Macarons are made of almond flour, sugar, and egg whites. The outer shell of the macaron can take on almost any flavor, from pistachio and chocolate to vanilla and raspberry.
Making macarons is very different from making many other types of cookies. Macarons do not contain all-purpose flour or butter, and they need to dry, or cure, after baking to achieve the proper crisp texture characteristic of a well-made macaron.
Light and delicate, macarons can be tailored to the color theme of a wedding or birthday party, or they can be customized to suit the season or a holiday.
What are macarons filled with?
Macarons are a heavenly treat that can contain various fillings, including Swiss meringue buttercream, jam, or chocolate ganache. The most delicious macarons are those with fillings that complement the flavor of the outer macaron meringue shell.
For example, a salted caramel crunch macaron we made recently featured a luscious caramel shell with a toasted marshmallow Swiss meringue buttercream. We also added a caramel white chocolate mousse with chunks of caramelized white chocolate, macadamia nuts, and sea salt, all topped with a caramel drizzle.
What do macarons taste like?
A well-made macaron should have a crisp outside and a soft, chewy middle. This contrast in textures comes from sandwiching the crisp meringue shells around a filling. The insides of the macarons soften from a smooth, flavorful filling, creating the distinctive texture we associate with a macaron.
What’s the difference between a macaron and a macaroon?
Macarons vs. macaroons … they’re almost spelled the same, but these two bakery delicacies are very different.
Macarons are baked almond meringue shells sandwiched around a filling. Macaroons, on the other hand, are made of egg whites and coconut and are usually formed into mounds. While macarons have a French origin, macaroons are traditionally associated with Jewish cuisine. Because macaroons don’t contain any leaveners like baking powder, yeast, or flour, they’re perfect for special Jewish celebrations, such as Passover, where foods with leavening agents are forbidden.
Macarons and macaroons are both gluten-free desserts since they contain no gluten-based flour products.
