It’s your best friend’s birthday, and you plan to surprise her with a decorated cake. But how do you get it to the party without having a disaster in your vehicle along the way? Knowing how to transport a cake safely in your car will ensure your dessert goes from point A to point B without any problems.

Build a Solid Base

While a pretty cake pedestal makes a show-stopping presentation, it can be very unwieldy in a vehicle. That’s why using a solid base for your cake is best. A base for transporting cakes could be a piece of sturdy ¾-inch plywood from the home improvement center, a breadboard, or a wooden cutting board.

To avoid having the bottom of your cake come in contact with your carrying surface, slip a round of sturdy cardboard underneath the bottom of the cake. This cardboard round will also provide added stability for your cake during transport.

Think Inside the Box

When you’re transporting decorated cakes that are too big for cake carriers, place them in boxes large enough on all sides and taller than the cake. To keep the cake from sliding inside a box, line the bottom of the box with a nonskid mat. Yoga mat material or non-adhesive grip liner often used for lining the bottoms of kitchen cabinets and drawers works well.

If you’ve made the cake yourself, be sure to bring extra frosting and other embellishments, along with an offset spatula and cake decorating tools, to make any last-minute repairs.

Do It With Dowels

Wooden dowels are great for cakes you know you’ll need to transport in a car, especially layer cakes. Dowels can keep the layers of cake, frosting, and filling from shifting during transport, preventing cake layers from sliding out of position and creating an uneven-looking dessert.

You can find wooden dowels at home improvement stores. Once you have your layer cake assembled and decorated, insert four dowels in the center of the top layer of the cake, spacing the dowels slightly to create a square design on top. Using a rubber mallet, very gently tap the dowels into the cake until they reach the bottom layer of the cake. If some of the dowels remain visible above the frosting after you’ve tapped them into place, use a heavy-duty pair of gardening shears to cleanly cut off the dowels flush with the top layer of the cake.
